I am having a lovely day, enjoying chocolate, sunshine, a walk with a friend…
I hope you are too!
I am reading
Well, I have just enjoyed the most wonderful turn pager I have read in a while. Exactly what I needed: relatable characters, lots of twists: some expected, some unexpected. Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney was just a pleasure from start to finish. Netflix has promised us a TV series of another book of hers called His And Hers a fascinating mystery that I also enjoyed reading, so can’t wait! I have since quickly read two more of her books: ‘Sometimes I lie’ about two sisters and ‘I know Who You Are’, both a bit darker than the two I really enjoyed. They involve a small child’s perspective on a nasty situation, which I found quite unpleasant. So I am not finding Alice Feeney foolproof, but I did enjoy Rock Paper Scissors a lot!!
I am watching
The Welsh crime drama ‘The One That Got Away’ on BBC iPlayer. Not a bad watch, there is a slightly cheesey will they / won’t they romance going on between two detectives working together, some creepy characters and a plot that kept you in suspense right til the end, honestly quite scary in moments. Doug and I chuckled a bit at the amount of smoking people seem to still do in Wales, but other than that it is clearly a beautiful place and a worthy setting for crime dramas.
I am listening
To the podcast You Are Not Invisible After 50, most particularly to my friend Marie, about whom I have written for Ideal Home. I loved this deep dive into what makes her tick.
You can find out more about Marie here.
I also enjoyed this episode, with Lisa Barrett who worked as a beauty writer and editor for some illustrious titles ranging from Woman’s Own to Cosmopolitan and her recent transition from print to online, reflected my own career in interiors writing surprisingly closely.
You can find out more about Lisa here.
I am writing

About a gorgeous boathouse in Nantucket, I have not had the opportunity to visit it unfortunately, but actually find the experience of writing about it almost as transportive!! I do love my job.
I am enjoying

Fermenting – I was recommended Asa Simonsen’s book ‘Fermentation’ on a shoot in a house belonging to a beekeeper, Kate Atchley. I had already started my sourdough bread journey, from which there is no going back I assure you.
I am conscious that I need to start experimenting with seeds and herbs, but for now, the ability to create a simple white fluffy cloud-like loaf gives me so much pleasure I am resisting experimenting further. I started fermenting according to Asa’s instructions and I am absolutely hooked.
A meal is not complete without a tablespoon of these tasty concoctions. Apparently, they are good for us as well. I never ‘want’ to make ferments – there is something slightly daunting about it, you do need a bit of preparation and clean utensils and implements, I often can’t face it, then force myself, but, my goodness, it is so easy, I am quite well stocked up at the moment as a result, but Asa assures me that they last for months once ready.
I looked up The one that got away and I found it on our Finnish national broadcasting app! Lots of inspiring tips in you post!
